چکیده

An experimental study of the inelastic deformation of bulk metallic glass Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 under multiaxial compression using a confining sleeve technique is presented. In contrast to the catastrophic shear failure (brittle) in uniaxial compression, the metallic glass exhibited large inelastic deformation of more than 10% under confinement, demonstrating the nature of ductile deformation under constrained conditions in spite of the long-range disordered characteristic of the material. It was found that the metallic glass followed a pressure (p) dependent Tresca criterion 0 + p, and the coefficient of the pressure dependence was 0.17. Multiple parallel shear bands oriented at 45° to the loading direction were observed on the surfaces of the deformed specimens and were responsible for the overall inelastic deformation.

Crystallization kinetics and glass-forming ability of bulk metallic glasses Pd40Cu30Ni10P20 and Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 from classical theory

Due to their scientific significance and potential engineering applications, bulk metallic glasses are among the most intensively studied advanced materials. Understanding the glass-forming ability GFA of these metallic alloys is a long-standing subject. While a large number of empirical factors have been proposed to correlate with GFA of the alloys, a full understanding of GFA remains a goal t...

Overheating threshold and its effect on time–temperature-transformation diagrams of zirconium based bulk metallic glasses

A pronounced effect of overheating is observed on the crystallization behavior for the three zirconium-based bulk metallic glasses: Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 , Zr57Cu15.4Ni12.6Al10Nb5 , and Zr52.5Cu17.9Ni14.6Al10Ti5 . A threshold overheating temperature is found for each of the three alloys, above which there is a drastic increase in the undercooling level and the crystallization times. Time...

Shock wave response of a zirconium-based bulk metallic glass and its composite

A zirconium-based bulk metallic glass, Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 ~Vit 1!, and its composite, Zr56.3Ti13.8Cu6.9Ni5.6Nb5.0Be12.5 ~b-Vit!, were subjected to planar impact loading. A surprisingly low amplitude elastic precursor and bulk wave, corresponding to the elastic response of the ‘‘frozen structure’’ of the intact metallic glasses, were observed to precede the rate-dependent large deforma...

COMPARISON OF THE CORROSION BEHAVIOR OF A BULK AMORPHOUS METAL, Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5, WITH ITS CRYSTALLIZED FORM

Since the discovery of the first metallic glass in 1960 (1), amorphous metals have been made in a variety of compositions. However, they have been largely fabricated as thin ribbons less than a millimeter in thickness because fast cooling rates (;10 K/sec) have been required to retain the metastable amorphous phase. Recently, however, a new class of amorphous metals has been developed which req...

Stress-corrosion fatigue–crack growth in a Zr-based bulk amorphous metal

Electrochemical and mechanical experiments were conducted to analyze the environmentally influenced cracking behavior of a bulk amorphous metal, Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5. This study was motivated by a scientific interest in mechanisms of fatigue–crack propagation in an amorphous metal, and by a practical interest in the use of this amorphous metal in applications that take advantage of its ...
